If it doesn’t rain it pours. Misfortune and difficult situations have followed each other in rapid succession over the last year for DA guitarist Robin Brancher, founding member of Desolation Angels.
Like many other bands out there, we feel like we have been battered from all sides. The general state of the world, the impact of covid, including hospitalisations within the band and wider family members, as well as massive changes within the music industry, have all meant that bands like ours have had to make big changes.
It all makes for a significant moment in history and one that we will all look back on.
My hands are tied, metaphorically speaking. Robin has recently suffered a work-related accident that resulted in both wrists being fractured from the subsequent fall and he has had to have surgery on both wrists. Frustratingly, this will put him out of action for at least eight to ten weeks. However, there is to be a review of the surgery in the coming days, thereafter a more accurate prediction will be made as to when he can pick up the guitar again and ROCK the heck out of it.
Covid, hospitalisation and a silver lining. Recordings have been put on hold for the time being not just because of Robin’s injuries, but also because of Covid mildly (thank heavens!) affecting a band member, plus a family member of the band being unexpectedly taken into hospital. All these unforeseen circumstances have played a big part in pushing back release dates for new music coming out of the DA camp. Needless to say, DA are on the mend and will reconvene in due time, and pre-production recording will once again re-start in earnest just as soon as it is possible to do so.
The Silver Lining. In a good upturn of events, thanks to Steve Saunders (Bass player and Head Honcho at STD ‘Spreading The Disease’) STD guitarist Ashley (Cleland) budding recording engineer and a man with a passion for loopers and sound effects is to join forces with DA for the oncoming recordings. These recordings will consist of pr-production demos to consolidate ideas within the band and the possible release of an EP* for fans hungry to hear the new sounds. Hopefully followed by a fully blown album. There has been an abundance of riffs produced by Robin over the past year or so, and he aims to get as much new DA music out there as possible, hence the EP release, and then in time nine to ten tracks to be included on a future album. This music will consist of tracks, riffs and ideas all taken from Robin’s home demos recoded and thought out after the inevitable impasse, demise and downturn between blinkered and unadventurous ex-members of DA.
DA are: Permanent members Matt Oakman (Vocals) Robin Brancher (Guitars) with Steve Saunders (Bass Guitar) and Ashley Cleland (Guitars) offering their services separately from their main focal point STD ‘Spreading The Disease’.
The DA music itself will be an adventurous step forward from anything that Robin has been involved with before coming out from Desolation Angels. DA will be experimental, along progressive lines perhaps, combining catchy shorter tunes with longer and darker passages of music, emphasising haunting melancholy sounds and dark doom ladened musical moods, but with that ever present DA rhythmic sound of Heavy Metal riffing.
